COMET™ Could Support Efforts to Mitigate the Unfavorable Impact of a Fiscal Cliff Scenario

As 2013 quickly approaches, many of us are setting resolutions for the coming year. From an operational perspective, the “Fiscal Cliff” is weighing heavily on long term and post-acute providers (LTPAC) as they identify ways to streamline operational and financial efficiencies.
The “Fiscal cliff” is the popular shorthand term used to describe what citizens of the U.S. face on January 1, 2013 when the terms of the Budget Control Act of 2011 are scheduled to go into effect.
Among the laws set to change at midnight on December 31, 2012, are the end of last year’s temporary payroll tax cuts (resulting in a 2% tax increase for workers), the end of certain tax breaks for businesses, shifts in the alternative minimum tax that would take a larger bite, the end of the tax cuts from 2001-2003, and the beginning of taxes related to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA). At the same time, the spending cuts agreed upon as part of the debt ceiling deal of 2011 will begin to go into effect. According to Barron's, over 1,000 government programs - including the defense budget and Medicare are in line for "deep, automatic cuts." This includes Medicare cuts to physicians and, most likely to reimbursement to LTPAC and other healthcare services (source).
The possibilities of increasing reimbursement, enhancing overall efficiency and saving costs through LINTECH’s COMET™ could significantly support facilities in their efforts to mitigate the unfavorable impact of a fiscal cliff scenario.
Integrated solutions include:
  • Resident/Patient Account Suite: is the most efficient, effective and powerful integrated LTPAC clinical and financial tool for your facility's revenue cycle management.
  • Clinical/EMR Suite: comprehensive solution for every aspect of charting and documenting patient care, from tracking and managing, to assessing, planning, retrieving and reporting.
  • Financial & Administrative Services Suite: offers the most advanced, comprehensive yet easy-to-use LTPAC solution for managing your accounting and administering your business processes at the user, department and facility levels.
Contact us to discuss your operational goals and how LINTECH can be your valued partner in achieving your efficiency resolutions in 2013.

CAST LeadingAge Case Study Findings

LINTECH’s COMET™ Point-of-Care application was recently the subject of a CAST case study provided by Monroe Community Hospital at the LeadingAge Annual Meeting. The case study, Upgrading an Existing EHR (Electronic Health Record), provided answers to questions about implantation, use and impacts of EHRs in regards to long-term and post-acute care (LTPAC) providers.

One of the outcomes of the case study showed that COMET helped save valuable employee time. There was an improvement in workflow specifically for certified nursing assistants (CNAs). Previous paper documentation is usually completed in the last hour of a CNA’s shift. Now this time has been given back to direct resident care. The accuracy of the documentation has improved because observations and treatments are recorded immediately after they are completed, rather than at the end of a shift. They are also not influenced by what has already been documented.

Check back for other outcomes from the LeadingAge CAST case study.

Technology Will Play Major Role in Preventing Rehospitalization

A recent article in McKnight's stated that technology, including electronic health records, will play a large part in preventing rehospitalization.

“We’re seeing more and more technology vendors implementing interoperability and pursuing certification for long-term and post-acute EHRs. We’re also seeing some of the members starting to think about advanced features,” said Majd Alwan, Executive Director of CAST and LeadingAge Senior Vice President of Technology.

LINTECH being one of the members Alwan refers to is what makes them a leading provider of long-term care software.

COMET MDS Software Solution eliminates billing errors

A recent article from Long-Term Living claims that 25% of skilled nursing facility claims in 2009 contained errors, resulting in a $1.5 billion loss from “inappropriate Medicare payments.” The good news is that with COMET's MDS 3.0 Application, issues like this won't occur.

LINTECH designed this application not only to save you time but also to eradicate errors - all by having the maximum amount of information from other applications flow into our MDS Software Solution. The errors that cause incorrect Medicare payments simply cannot happen with LINTECH, because any data entered into our COMET MDS Application flows automatically into the appropriate fields, including the applicable fields in our billing application. There is absolutely no human intervention in the process, so we do not have the issue with errors this article refers to.

Here are some of the benefits to our MDS Software Solution:
  • Assessment Scheduler schedules and tracks due dates for assessment completion
  •  Defaults demographic, census, Point-of-Care (Touchscreen), rehab, orders, assessments,  infections, wound and other information from the EMR - no need to re-enter
  •  Automatically calculates RUG III, RUG IV and Care Area Triggers
  •  Automatically updates RUG IV information in the billing system

Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program

LINTECH's software solutions are ready to assist LTC providers meet the Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program (HRRP) challenge with the COMET Clinical/EMR Suite. As of October 1st, 2012 Medicare will recover payments from hospitals for unnecessary readmissions within 30 days of patient discharge.

Designed to lower the total Medicare costs, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) encourages hospitals to enact better follow-up and other procedures that reduce preventable readmissions among Medicare patients. The first three diagnoses include Acute Myocardial Infarction, Pneumonia and Congestive Heart Failure.

Acute care providers will look to their community-based "partners" to help ensure discharged patients are receiving the proper clinical follow-up and care to avoid unnecessary rehospitalization. Click here to learn how LINTECH can assist your organization.
